Busy editors appreciate copy editing services because it allows them to focus on scientific content when reading papers, rather than matters of grammar, punctuation, and style. In addition, our large pool of experienced copy editors can get the work done, regardless of editor changes, staff turnover, irregular volume of copy, or other problems that might delay production.

Our copy editors prepare the document for production . The changes made by the copy editor will be incorporated into the proofs, so the proofs editors see will be remarkably error-free. The copy editor will also query the author for missing or incomplete information, allowing the author to incorporate these corrections in the first proof stage. ACG's copyediting services are an investment in a journal's continuity, accuracy, and consistency.

Our copy editors have extensive experience with scientific and scholarly writing and familiarity with editorial practices and standard reference sources and style guides. They combine information from detailed style sheets (prepared by three full-time staff Copyediting Coordinators) with editorial and typesetting knowledge.

The editorial office must make sure that scientific content is correct and acceptable. Copy editors will not, for instance, look up genus and species names to confirm accuracy, nor will copy editors look up reference citations in the original source to correct references.

The copy editor will:

Edit manuscripts for established internal style, such as presentation of text references and the References section; conventions for abbreviations of units, statistics, and acronyms; presentation of numbers; and formats for text headings, tables, and figure captions.

Edit manuscripts for proper and consistent spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Edit manuscripts for established typographical style, such as bold, italic, and cap and small caps.

Recast confusing or grammatically incorrect sentences.

Query the author to provide missing information.

Check literature citations in text against the References section and correct or query the author.

Reformat tables for style (including correct footnote designators) and for clarity and efficiency of information.

The editorial office should:

•

Verify the scientific and technical content of manuscripts.

•

Ensure that units of measure are expressed in acceptable terms.

•

Provide necessary information, such as Latin nomenclature, key words, running header/footer information (such as short title), and received/accepted dates.

•

Ensure that there is no missing material, such as abstracts, key words, or figures.

•
Submit articles in proper electronic format.
